History: five generations in the Langhe

━ HISTORY ━

The roots: from 1923 to Bricco San Biagio Riserva

A family business in the heart of La Morra

San Biagio Wine Estate has distant roots: the first labels with its own brand date back to 1923, at a time when there were very few independent wineries in the Langhe. In 1963 the first big change arrived: the Roggero family moved to the historic farmhouse situated on the Bricco San Biagio. Aware of this opportunity, Giovanni Roggero, son of the founder Giacomo, was among the first to understand the great potential of the Langhe vineyards, specializing in the cultivation of vines and in the production of wines.

"One step behind the wine", without forcing

The family-run estate has grown to the current 22 hectares of owned vineyards thanks to tireless work, great care and respectful attention to the environment, with the aim of obtaining healthy and well-ripened grapes, produced from well-exposed soils and cultivated in a sustainable way. The winemaking and ageing processes reflect the philosophy of the winery: not to create a wine, but to preserve and enhance what each vintage and the territory can express in a natural way, always remaining one step behind the wine with humility. Only in this way can rare nuances be grasped such as the notes of face powder and peach of Bricco San Biagio or those of lacquer and flint identifiable in Capalot.

Alongside the historic cellar of 1923, where the precious vintages of Barolo are aged, stands the cellar dedicated to vinification and bottle ageing, delicately nestled inside the hill, designed to work in harmony with the landscape and the rhythm of wine.

Vineyards, MGAs and particles: identity of the Langhe in the glass

Great Barolo Vineyards and estate crus

With a clear understanding that only from optimal exposure can an important wine be born, balanced in elegance and structure, the company's vineyards in the territory of La Morra fall exclusively in areas suitable for MGAs (Additional Geographical Designations) and are part of the Great Vineyards of Barolo: Bricco San Biagio, Galina, Capalot, Rocchettevino, Roncaglia Soprana and Serra dei Turchi. Gradually the estate also grew in planted surface with new acquisitions and plantings: among the most important was the one in the Municipality of Treiso for the production of Barbaresco Montersino (2001), a second vineyard in the precious Rocchettevino and other parcels in the Capalot designation.

In the vineyards in the upper part of Capalot, formerly known as "Pria" (stone), the soil changes from sandy to marly-calcareous, transmitting to the wines an incredible flavour and mineral notes almost attributable to hydrocarbons. Here, one of the few wineries to have always believed in the potential of a rare variety, we produce Verduno Pelaverga DOC in purity from Pelaverga Piccolo, a wine increasingly sought after by enthusiasts and gourmets; next to it, a small vineyard of Cabernet Sauvignon vinified in purity gives rise to Langhe Cabernet Sauvignon, characterized by intense fruity notes.
